Abstract Given the current and growing labor squeeze, it seems a logical solution would be to do what we already do best in this industry: grow our own. Like it or not, greenhouse growing operations may need to take on the role that technical schools and universities are abandoning when it comes to horticulture training. In-house education, hands-on job training, mentorship programs, and promoting from within could be, may have to be, the answer to your labor problems — and the future of growing new growers.

The GS1 DataBar is a family of seven barcodes, four of which can be read by omnidirectional scanners at Point-of-Sale. The smaller size will provide several advantages to anyone working in the supply chain and specifically for the fresh produce industry, allowing products that have not been previously barcoded to be quickly and accurately scanned at Point-of-Sale. The benefits of the new GS1 DataBar include:

We're unique in how much we measure,” she says. Most people wouldn't spend quite as much time as we do, but because of our unique situation — we're never empty, we grow lots of different varieties, and we don't use pesticides — that combination forces us to dedicate the time because we save time and costs later.”

We've tested this out. A molecular technique using DNA profiling was used to detect the variation of the microbial community present on the surface of produce, including bacteria, yeasts and moulds. This method allowed us to analyse and identify complex DNA structures from all the bacteria, yeasts and fungi we found. All the micro-organisms are visualised on a gel and the band on the gel can be photographed, providing a fingerprint of the ecological origin.

I am a wine producer. Do I want to take the risk that my final customer - who may pay USD 150+ for my bottles - opens a bottle during a classy dinner and finds it has been "compromised" because it was not stored and moved in the right conditions (say, between 12°C and 16°C)? Shouldn't I expect from all actors downstream that they transparently report to me that they've done their job correctly without me losing my brand's reputation?
