The best salad dressings are those that enhance the overall taste while still allowing the individual salad components to shine. Today many varieties of salad dressings and sauces can be found everywhere which means we can add interesting twists and flavors to our salads and other dishes. Therefore, MF Food has presented its wide unique range of salad dressing that cater to all its customer’s desire.

Freshness is everything when it comes to salads; the crisp and refreshing taste, the vibrant colours of the different ingredients – not to mention the nutritional values - are the qualities that make a salad appealing for your customer, and all of them are quickly lost right along with the freshness of the vegetables. As such, choosing the right packaging for your salads becomes an important choice. By using the right salad containers, you can keep your salads at that perfect level of freshness for quite a length of time.

The spring mix harvesting process has been documented previously on the blog (see post HERE), and in this week’s blog, you get to see the salad processing step, showing what happens to those different types of lettuce varieties after they are harvested. The continuation of this process takes place with the same company, Babé Farms, at their processing facility (Fresh Venture Foods) in Santa Maria, California.
What Lettuce is in Spring Mix?
Although we are accustomed to the name “spring mix”, all companies use their own unique mixture to create their specific mix. For Babé Farms, they create multiple different types of lettuce mixtures. In the picture below, you can see how they dictate what types of lettuce are included into each mix.

5 Ways to Reduce Fresh Produce Inventory Waste Right Now
5 Ways to Reduce Food Waste Right Now
“Sometimes the simplest lessons are the most groundbreaking.” That truth is over 30 years old, but its words still resonate loud and clear.
The goal of today’s post is to share a some surprising, yet logical ways to reduce inventory right now…
The key to reducing inventory is not to buy LESS; the key is to buy LATER. Teams that use this inventory reduction strategy and mindset will free up incredible amounts of capital for their organizations.
THE KEY TO INVENTORY REDUCTION IS NOT TO BUY LESS; THE KEY IS TO BUY LATER.
So as you might guess, the opposite absolutely holds true:
The key to raising service levels is typically not buying MORE; it is buying EARLIER. Perhaps we’ll save that breakdown for another day. Here we’ll explore ‘buying later’ as a strategy to reduce inventory and challenge you to see if there’s opportunity to do so in your organization.
How to reduce inventory in supply chain planning: those first few days
Let’s start with a quick word about your initial days using an advanced supply chain planning solution. Most companies experience a dramatic and welcome inventory reduction when they first move from the world of old buying reports and spreadsheets to a best-in-class inventory planning solution. The advanced forecasts offer dramatic results as expected, and the proper safety stock amounts finally being placed on each item often offer a shocking inventory reduction.
This common benefit is based on the fact that most companies carry too much safety stock on their fast-moving, or smooth ‘A’ items. Once those victories are realized, much more opportunity typically unfolds. Even a strong team with an advanced inventory planning and replenishment solution will continue to see deeper results as they increase their knowledge and be more open to coaching and growth.
When safety stock gets inflated, here’s why

Optimizing Fresh Produce Inventory Management.  oday’s PlanningPosts chat is with long-time veteran in the inventory optimization world, Tracy Coon, along with PlanningPosts evangelist Dan Craddock, on the topic of Optimizing New Item inventory.

Summary: New item forecasting is a troubling area because of its tremendous profit impact. If a company has $50M in inventory, New Items could be $5M or more of that investment. Yet, as Tracy explains, so few demand forecasting teams make optimizing new items a key focus. Download now to learn some strategies for putting a sense of urgency behind improving the performance of your new items across the portfolio.
Todd Intro: I am here with two people who consider themselves lifelong inventory optimization professionals. They love the profession and their careers have been built on educating inventory analysts and inspiring inventory planning and demand forecasting excellence.
Welcome, Tracy Coon and Dan Craddock! It’s great to have you both on the show and I know you want to dig into this topic in a big way. You were both replenishment analysts for wholesale companies prior to becoming education consultants.
Dan & Tracy: brief introductions
Todd: Despite this passion for the profession, you both say that you continue to be frustrated by the lack of success in one key aspect of a company’s inventory:

Fresh produce supply chain planning, demand forecasting, pricing: fruit & vegetable packing
Demand Forecasting,
Inventory Optimization, and
Price Elasticity
Supply chain planning relies heavily on science and algorithms for better demand forecasting and inventory management. This includes forecasting independent customer demand, which changes with customer preferences. It also includes dependent demand that aggregates demand streams at a stocking point upstream to other echelons of the supply chain.
Let’s look at how science and machine learning in Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) is streamlining demand forecasting, inventory optimization and price elasticity to improve long-/short-term planning for complex distribution supply chains.
Why is the Distribution Supply Chain So Complex?
Many factors are contributing to increasing complexity in these forecasts, including outbound customer demand volatility, managing multiple suppliers with long lead times (especially overseas), constrained transportation capacity, and increasing inbound supply line volatility.

Large Assortments
Distributors face even greater complexity in managing their supply chains. Large assortments to serve existing customers has become key to differentiation, but introduces an ever larger assortment with intermittent, lumpy and sparse demand in the “long tail.”

Well… more like you are here to Show Yourself The Money through strategic Special Order analysis. Perishable inventory management software, Reduce perishable inventory waste with FIFO and strict inventory management & monitoring.
Perishable inventory demands attention. Specific inventory-tracking methods help with the job of managing and accounting for perishable inventory. Perishable refers to items that have an expiration date, such food that will go bad if not eaten in a certain amount of time. Single-period inventory control and first-in-first-out, or FIFO, inventory valuation are commonly used to deal with perishable goods.
Much of operations is about being able to match supply to demand. This can be difficult with certain business models that sell perishable goods. As a result, managerial accounting has come up with methods for recognizing inventory for perishable goods. Perishable goods, or goods that may have no value in the next period, can be difficult for managers to track; however, the single-period inventory control system can help to alleviate many issues involved with automatically replenishing inventory when it's down.

Facilitating Fresh Food Inventory Management with ERP Solutions

Radishes being washed.
On the surface, fresh food inventory management might seem simple—you need to know what you have and what you’re running low on so that you can replenish stock as necessary. But when you take into account the challenges that fresh produce businesses like yours face, including varying product freshness ranges, traceability demands and sustainability initiatives, the matter becomes a whole lot more complicated.

Add it all up, and it’s more than an individual staff member, or even a team, can handle on their own. Keeping tabs on the supply levels of one or more large production facilities is a job best left to technologies dedicated to the purpose, like the fresh food inventory management features of specialized enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions.

Here, we’ll go into greater depth on three reasons why inventory management is so crucial to fresh produce companies, as well as three tools of advanced ERP systems that, being built on industry best practices, can improve your approach and drive better results.

Why Is Inventory Management So Important for Fresh Produce Businesses?
At its heart, inventory management is about having full visibility into reliably accurate stock level figures. In practice, though, it’s about much more than mere numbers—your efforts in this area also have the potential to make a positive impact on several other aspects of your organization.

1. Traceability and Food Safety
Both regulatory bodies and consumers alike are demanding total traceability from food and beverage businesses. It’s vital that you have bi-directional visibility from one end of your supply chain to the other, and a critical portion of that journey occurs within your own facilities as materials are moved into inventory and then picked for processing and packaging.

Capturing and updating relevant product data at every tracking point is necessary to keep your records complete, so it’s to your advantage to automate the process of collecting and logging with the functionalities of a fresh-specific ERP solution. Keep in mind that even the smallest, most granular details could be relevant down the line—in the case of fresh produce, country of origin and variety can be especially pertinent—so ensure that the interface can accommodate as many fields and labels as the situation calls for.

This also plays a big role in food safety, as you’ll need to be able to dig down to the lot level or further in order to find the source of a contamination and identify what goods might have been affected. With the right ERP and inventory management features at your fingertips, you can feel confident and act quickly in the case of an audit or recall.

2. Minimizing Waste and Becoming More Sustainable
The perishable nature of fresh produce makes recording the freshness ranges of your products and utilizing them accordingly of utmost importance. After all, if you don’t move time-sensitive goods to market fast enough, you waste not only the items themselves but also the money, time and energy you invested in harvesting or purchasing them from suppliers and storing them on-site.

The inventory management capabilities of ERP built for the fresh produce industry were designed with this reality in mind, and maintain all important dates in the system while also helping implement a first-expiry, first-out (FEFO) picking method. That way, whatever is closest to the end of its window of viability is prioritized first to make sure it does not spoil before it can be sold and enjoyed.

Cutting down on the losses you incur as a result of your produce going bad can have a big impact on both your profit margins and brand reputation for sustainability. In this way, you can accomplish two objectives at once by making better use of what you have and becoming a leaner operation with the right platform in place.

3. Customer Satisfaction
Fresh foods continue to be one of the most in-demand categories for individual customers and retailers alike. According to FMI, 80% of grocery shoppers say that high-quality fruits and vegetables are among the most important attributes when it comes to choosing what store to visit.

With the market healthy, you need to be able to capitalize on the opportunity, and that means delivering the right products in optimal quantities to your clients. The fresh food inventory management features of a purpose-built ERP solution can help you avoid stock-outs at inopportune times by making your figures highly visible. The system also syncs up with your sales outlets so that replenishment orders are always received and processed in a timely fashion, and that specific customer requirements on quality are fulfilled.

You want to be known by the stores and restaurants that sell your products, as well as the end consumers, as a company that delivers delicious fresh food reliably. Therefore, it pays to have a robust, dependable technological foundation to make sure you’re in the position to satisfy those expectations with supply perfectly aligned with demand.

What Inventory Management Tools of ERP Platforms Drive Improvement?
Within the inventory management modules of sophisticated industry-specific ERP systems like Aptean Food & Beverage ERP, purpose-built functionality can greatly simplify your operations and streamline your processes. These three tools will allow you to consistently have the fresh produce products that you need, when you need them.

1. Advanced Demand Forecasting
Through the analysis of past sales data, market trends and seasonality information, fresh produce ERP solutions can forecast demand for certain fresh food products months in advance so that your sourcing is appropriate to the situation. You’ll then be able to leverage these estimations to make sure you grow or purchase the right amounts to channel to your outlets.

When you have a good idea ahead of time about how much of a certain crop will be necessary, you won’t be caught in the awkward spot of having undershot your needs or not having enough options for suppliers, nor will you end up with excess unsellable goods that go to waste. Striking that perfect balance is much easier with the right technology on your side.

2. Automatic Replenishment
While you no doubt have professionals who are at least in part responsible for keeping tabs on what stocks need to be replenished, it’s important to have a backup in place should something slip through the cracks. Through the inventory management interface, ERP solutions built for fresh produce businesses like yours allow you to set the threshold at which you would like automatic reorders issued, heading off potential shortages that could occur at critical periods.

You’ll also have complete control over which supplier receives the request and just how much additional supply will be delivered, and all necessary records will be created in the system, just like a manually issued purchase order. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you’ll always have enough of your various materials to carry on with operations without interruption.

3. Integrations with Connected Devices
As mentioned above, a large part of fresh food inventory management is the collection and maintenance of data, but it’s best to automate and streamline that process as much as possible—for both efficiency and accuracy. Jotting notes down by hand and entering them in a terminal later is error-prone and time-consuming, so fresh produce ERP systems take the matter off the plate of your employees by connecting directly with the devices that are analyzing the characteristics and reading the labels of your goods.

For measurements, ERP platforms can integrate with smart sensors and scales to automatically pipe readings of temperature, ripeness and more into your database in real time. And for barcodes, QR codes and other kinds of data-rich labels, the solution can sync with handheld and fixed scanners to immediately create and update records for an airtight approach.

Achieving Excellence in Inventory Management with an ERP System
Whether your fresh produce business has many lines or few, a supply chain that’s sprawling or simple, good inventory management will play a considerable role in your success down the road. We’ve looked at a few of the reasons ERP solutions are the technology to turn to for superior performance on this front, but consider also just how transformational the implementation of a truly cross-functional platform could be for your organization.

You’ll have all of your departments connected and integrated, from finance and sales to the folks on the warehouse floor. You can operate on all cylinders and plan well into the future knowing that you’ll always have sufficient stock to meet market demand but also won’t be held back by waste that hurts your bottom line.

At Aptean, we have in-depth fresh food industry knowledge through decades of work with a variety of clients in the sector. There are unique challenges to confront when it comes to consistently providing excellent fresh produce offerings, so we’ve built tools expressly for those purposes to improve the processes—and profitability—of our customers.

Food service specialist Fresh Ideas grows company with NetSuite

Fresh Ideas Management serves quality food concepts to students in campus dining halls, coffee shops and other campus outlets. With their FreshX mobile app they allow students to simply order everything from salads, to pulled-pork sandwiches. Their focus on on-going technological innovations sets them apart from even the larger competitors. “Technology is really changing the way students interact in dining halls, and we are at the forefront of that change” says Kate Boatright, CFO of Fresh Ideas Management. In order to grow their business and remain an innovation-leader in their industry, Fresh Ideas choose NetSuite as their top-notch future-ready ERP-solution.

No self-service to data Prior to 2018, the directors of the many different business units within Fresh Ideas entered sales, inventory and vendor invoice data into a homegrown database. This data was then downloaded by the corporate accounting department and imported into QuickBooks. This process made it challenging to offer self-service data access and analytics for the business units. For a company with two subsidiaries, 1200 employees and a revenue of $50 million this was an unacceptable situation. A new ERP-solution was needed. After evaluating several solutions, such as SAGE, Fresh Ideas opted for NetSuite as their business growth enabler.

Fresh Food Business Management System
A coherent distribution system
Unlike factory-produced items, bananas are an agricultural product that can be easily affected by the weather, and thus their quality is subject to constant change. In order to provide safe bananas that provide peace of mind to customers, we have put a coherent distribution system in place in which we undertake everything—from production to import, processing, and sales. By doing so, we are able to carry out proprietary quality control, allowing us to deliver a stable supply of high-quality bananas to our customers.

The power of people
In order to deliver bananas in peak condition, we must rely on the skills of our personnel developed over many years of experience. Bananas are imported while they are still green, and are ripened to their yellow color in Japan before being sold. During the ripening process, ripeness and quality levels are always visually checked by our staff. To deliver bananas at their prime, we must not only have product knowledge but also understand where and how the bananas were harvested, and our staff's many years of experience is what enables us to provide high-quality products.

Across all points in the supply chain
In order to import high-quality, trustworthy ingredients from various countries in North America, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa, we not only have branch offices or local affiliates in each country but have also implemented an investment project called ANA Farm for walnuts and prune farms, thereby ensuring a stable supply of high-quality products worthy of the ANA Group name at a reasonable price. For import and sales, members of staff carry out visual and manual checks at all points in the supply chain. They do this not only for raw produce but also for department store gift items and luxury ingredients.
