Melon in Australia
Watermelon, rockmelon and honeydew are grown across Queensland (Chinchilla, Bowen, the Burdekin), NSW (the Riverina), Western Australia and the Northern Territory (Katherine), giving year-round supply. Australia produced 62,776 t of muskmelons (rockmelon and honeydew) in the year to June 2024 and exported 10,998 t (Hort Innovation).
After the 2018 Listeria outbreak linked to rockmelons, FSANZ introduced Standard 4.2.9 for melons, in force since 12 February 2025: growers and primary processors need a food safety management statement, controlled wash and sanitiser processes and traceability.
